The View Trail Race 15k/25k 2024

  • 161 Sportsman Lane North Bend, PA, 17760 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

A great PA Trail Dog event that gives runners a chance to take on parts of the Hyner Challenge in the fall. The 25k will be modified to bypass Johnson Run but still give everyone the challenge Hyner is known for. The View, Post Draft, SOB, and Huff Run will remain as the main trails used for this event. We’re also offering a 15K option. The 15k course follows the 25K up to the View and then splits from the course at mile 5.5 and heads back to the finish using the Huff Run Trail. It's a great option for those not looking for a 25K distance but still wanting to get to The View.

Hellbender 5k/Half 2024

August 25, 2024

This is a great course for both road or trail runners. Fast, flat, out and back along the scenic lakes and beautiful Weiser State Forest. Falcon Race Timing has teamed up with the RCVCA to help promote clean water in the state forest and surrounding Roaring Creek Watershed. Proceeds with help benefit RCVCA.

The race gets its name from the species of aquatic salamander known as the hellbender, which are native to the hills and mountains of the eastern U.S., and can grow to as much as two feet long. Because they breathe through their skin, they require healthy, pristine, unpolluted streams and creeks to survive. Due to development and urbanization over recent decades, however, many of their habitats have become fouled and their numbers have drastically declined — they’re just one of the many species the race organizers hope to benefit over the long term with their efforts here.

Both the 5K and the half marathon races follow out-and-back courses that start and finish at the Route 54 parking area in Bear Gap, which lies between the two small towns of Elysburg and and Mount Carmel. From there, runners make their way along the roads that wind along the reservoir lakes inside this 9,000-acre park, one of 16 tracts that make up the Weiser State Forest in what is known as the ridge and valley region of eastern Pennsylvania.

Greenwood Furnace Half/10k 2024

10K option

The long 10 Kilometer route will start at Greenwood Furnace State Park (at the furnace), traverse Rothrock State Forest to the fire tower by way of the Greenwood spur. Behind Pavilion #1 runners will warm-up/walk/jog back to the rock furnace, where the race begins. Runners will run back the loop past the pavilion, up Chestnut spring trail briefly, cross the service road on to Spencer a wide, rolling abandoned service road. Off of Spencer Trail, runners will be directed left for their first brutal climb up Greenwood Spur (1200 feet). The spur starts steep but as you approach the Greenwood Tower it begins to level off (center of the figure 8).
At the tower runners will find a hydration/first station and turn right to begin their descent back down to the Park. Runners will be directed down a short section of grassy service road (~.5 miles) to access Ruff Gap Trail for their final descent. Ruff Gap is a scraggly, consistently steep trail (~1 mile). At the bottom racers will be directed right on the level, grassy Spencer Trail (~1 mile). Volunteers will direct runners left on to Greenwood Spur for the final leg back to the pavilion (~1 mile).

Half Marathon option

The Greenwood Furnace Trail Challenge is an intense, rugged, single track half-marathon. A figure 8 route of rocky climbs and nasty downhills; it starts at Greenwood Furnace State Park, climbs to the fire tower, drops down in to Alan Seeger Natural Area before climbing back to the tower, and then returns down to the park.

The approximate 13 mile figure 8 trail course traverses Rothrock State Forest to Alan Seeger Natural Area and back to the park. The route will be marked with orange flagging and volunteers will be stationed at all road crossings. The course features two brutal ascents and descents with some recovery in between. The trails include a stream crossing, 3 footbridge crossings, rock gardens, mud, and some nasty scrambling.

Mount Tom Challenge 2024

The Course: Climb (or scramble some might say) up the 1100' vertical feet of trail from the Ansonia valley to the summit vista of Mt. Tom with views into the PA Grand Canyon and to the west nearly to Galeton. After catching your breath and those awesome views, continue a short distance along the ridge before descending most of the way back on a grassy (or more snowy this time of year) forest road. Reach the tent at the bottom before 11am and YOU GET TO DO IT AGAIN!!! How many laps can you do in two hours?

Cost: FREE - no frills, no prizes, just a great morning out on the trails. Some type of traction device may be required based on trail conditions (screw-shoes, yak-traks, microspikes, etc, or even snowshoes!) Remember conditions will vary with elevation and some areas hold snow much longer than most. Ice can be the toughest condition and is common this time of year. The course WILL vary greatly based on weather, snow and ice conditions. It's winter. It's part of what makes this a challenge!!!
